EVOLUTIONÄR ERPROBT
Videoserie
2019 - on going
The video series EVOLUTIONÄR ERPROBT investigate reactions and physical phenomena that have survived in our bodies over the course of human evolution. Römmelt uses selected examples to test what happens when these physical reactions are artificially created and prolonged. EVOLUTIONÄR ERPROBT is an invitation into a pulsating web in which nerves are tickled, the human organism defies the supposed longing for death, an infinite smile exposes human emotions, teasing play turns into violence and one's own pulse becomes sensually tangible.
The video series was launched in 2019 as an on going video project by Ronja Römmelt. Since then, Römmelt has continued to add new video works to the video series.
The video works have been shown regularly as a series or as individual works in solo and group exhibitions since 2019.

In Gemeinschaft | Videowork | 2020
How can a purely physical instruction be used to create a multi-layered group dynamic? This is the guiding question for the video work "In Gemeinschaft": based on a performative process, several performers meet, humming and with their eyes closed, within a demarcated square. Their movement patterns can be observed as if under a microscope, varying between amoeba-like entanglements and recurring singularities. The oscillating soundscape of the various humming tones develops an evocative effect and evokes associations with cult-like rituals.

kitzeln | Videowork | 2019
The physical reflex to tickling is pronounced in all humans, although its exact function has not yet been researched. Tickling each other often serves as a means of communication between people. In its affectionate version, it is a playful way of making contact; in its malicious version, it comes close to torture. In her video work, Römmelt shows tickling in precisely this ambivalence. The focus is entirely on the body-torso of performer Momo Fabienne Tanner, who is tickled from two sides, sometimes in a friendly manner, sometimes insidiously. The performer constantly struggles to control her twitching body, her uncontrollable impulses alternating between laughter and tears, pain and hilarity.

lächeln | Videowork | 2019
The communication researcher Vera F. Birkenbihl discovered that a conscious one-minute smile releases a large number of happiness hormones in people. But what happens if you hold a smile for longer than a minute? This question forms the starting point for the video work "smile". A specially developed six-stage process enables the performer Kofi Wahlen to perceive the effect of smiling on his body and his inner experience in a differentiated way. During each 15-minute video sequence, he experiences various emotional states ranging from joy to sadness to anger. The minimalist setting also makes his increasing mental and physical exertion tangible.

gähnen | Videowork |2019
In the video installation "gähnen", Römmelt examines the contagious power and movement quality of yawning. Yawning generally has negative connotations: It is interpreted as a sign of disinterest and is therefore suppressed in public. For Römmelt, however, yawning is a sign of relaxation and fascinates her as a moment of physical loss of control. Together with the performer Maria Rebecca Sautter, she developed a movement pattern to artificially produce a yawn. In the video installation, the performer works for over an hour in an attempt to induce a yawn. If she succeeds, she completely abandons herself to the physical impulses caused by the yawn. However, the movement material becomes increasingly distanced from its origin and the performer seems trapped in an exhausting cycle of failure and success. This impression is reinforced by the acoustic level experienced via headphones, which makes the performer's musical interplay of tension and relaxation audible.

atmen | Videowork | 2019
At the centre of the work "atmen" is the respiratory reflex, which forces people to take a breath shortly before suffocating. The performer artificially stops breathing by holding her breath until the respiratory reflex kicks in. The chosen image section depicts the human body as an autonomous organism that works and lives to its own rhythm. The possibility of ending one's life meets the resistance of the body, which struggles to continue living.
