the space in between
Choreography | 2019
Zwischenräume is a long-term participatory choreographic work for public spaces. It raises awareness of the in-between spaces we create through our habitual movements in specific public locations, as well as our feelings of closeness and distance and the projections with which we encounter one another.
At the heart of the artistic work is a choreographic process in which the performers both mirror the movement habits of passersby and invite them to participate in a choreographic score, jointly exploring interpersonal space as a place of encounter in public squares. In this context, the participatory choreographic work examines dynamics of attraction and repulsion while making visible the prejudices and projections we carry as we approach each other through movement in public space.
Through this choreographic framework, a continually growing network of new, unexpected encounters emerges, inviting passersby to pause, observe movement habits, and/or take part in the choreographic process.
Zwischenräume is a production of STUDIO RR that has been touring nationally and internationally since 2019 — made possible in part by generous support from Pro Helvetia. In 2021, the performance was nominated for the “Corona Call” award by Visarte Switzerland.
