Opening Up
Video | 2022
In the video installation Opening Up, Ronja Römmelt explores the relationship between physical gesture and societal gaze. Through a reduced, compelling movement and a clear visual language, she raises questions about intimacy, vulnerability, and power – inviting the audience to reflect on their own perspective of the female-perceived body.
At the center is a simple, repeated action: in an endless loop, Römmelt opens and closes her legs. This movement draws attention to the female sex as a physical opening – and simultaneously asks what it means to intimately open oneself to someone as a person perceived as female.
The camera adopts a bird’s-eye view – we see the body from Römmelt’s own perspective. This viewpoint creates closeness, almost a physical merging with the viewer, while also establishing distance. It recalls socially shaped regimes of looking and power relations under which female intimacy is often viewed.
