In Community
Video | 2021
Humming and with their eyes closed, eight performers move through a square – always drawn to the hum they find most sympathetic. The result is a visual and acoustic study of proximity, leadership, conformity, and the fragile balance between individuality and collectivity.
Based on a choreographic setting, multiple performers encounter each other within a marked square, humming and moving with eyes closed. Like under a microscope, their movement patterns become observable – oscillating between amoeba-like entanglements and recurring solitude.
The multilayered humscape develops an almost trance-like quality. It evokes associations with ritual acts and invites careful listening. Over the course of more than 50 minutes, the group can be seen repeatedly searching for orientation – for a voice to follow. At times, the sounds merge into a unified tone; at others, they stand in contrasting juxtaposition.
Without a single word, the video work reveals the subtle dynamics of group behavior: between adaptation and separation, guidance and autonomy.
In Community makes tangible how deeply the need for belonging and direction is rooted within collective contexts.
